Pink Lake or Lake Hillier is a phenomenal pink lake located on the middle island in the Archipelago off the coast of the Western Australia. 1. How is it Formed?
Formation of Pink Lake is still a topic which is not fully understood and a matter of discussion. Pink color is the prime attraction which usually appeared due to the Dunaliella Salina Microalgae element. It includes more salt content in water and produces carotenoid pigments in Lake’s water. Presence of Halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts is another minor reason which can also explain the lake’s unique color. Interesting thing is lake remain pink even during the summer time or even when lakes get dry out, which indicates that color occurs basically due to the microorganism rather than water content. There is a lot of salt and sodium bicarbonate also found in the water of the lake.
2. Aquatic Life
Since Pink Lake’s contain unique color and salt content, which makes it difficult for other aquatic life to survive, hardy microorganisms can exist in such extreme conditions. No fish, marine life’s and turtles are available to see beneath the lake. Its water is similar to the Dead Sea of Jordan.

Lake Hillier was first discovered by Matthew Flinder, a Navigator and Cartographer in 1802. He took some samples from the lake and mentioned that lake contains more salt content and not great place for aquatic life’s in his journal. After that many research and scientific evidence shows us Lake Hillier includes a hypersaline environment and extremophiles.

6. Swimming is Completely Prohibited
Today Lake Hillier is used only for tourism purposes since its beautiful surroundings and unique color of water. Water is clear and it causes no such harm to the human skin and Dunaliella salina alga which is completely harmless. But due to visitor traffic and global tourism recognition, swimming was completely prohibited. Swimming in the lake’s water is safe and fun but not for normal tourists.
